Spirit v. Flesh (Beth Wade)

Spirit VS Flesh

Galatians 5

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

When we are led by the flesh we give into temporal pleasures...

The cookie, the pizza, the alcohol...all the things we know are not good for our bodies…..

The nudity, the violence, the hate….all the the things we know are not good for our minds….

When we are led by these fleshly desires, and we feed these flesh desires, we do not see everlasting fruit. We see temporary happiness and joy. We have temporary relationships. We have a temporary purpose.

To be led by the Spirit, we choose the things that are going to bear good fruit. Things that will sustain us and our purpose. We have everlasting joy, everlasting happiness, everlasting relationships...everlasting life.

It is okay to indulge and celebrate, but it isn’t a place we can stay. It isn’t a place where our spirit is able to bear the best fruit. It isn't the place we are going to fulfill our purpose.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

3 There is a time for everything,

and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,

a time to plant and a time to uproot,

3 a time to kill and a time to heal,

a time to tear down and a time to build,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,

a time to mourn and a time to dance,

5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,

a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,

6 a time to search and a time to give up,

a time to keep and a time to throw away,

7 a time to tear and a time to mend,

a time to be silent and a time to speak,

8 a time to love and a time to hate,

a time for war and a time for peace.
