Purpose

Back in my elementary teaching days, nothing drove me more crazy than this conversation with a student:

*Student makes a poor decision*

Me, "Why did you do that?"

Student, " I dunno..."

What I would tell each and every student is, "No, you do know. You don't do something without first deciding you are going to do it. What made you decide to do what you did? What was the purpose?"

My goal was to teach them that not only do their decisions have consequences, but those decisions are theirs. I wanted them from a young age to be able to stop and think about the "why" behind their responses and actions, not to just react for the sake of reacting. I wanted them to know why they decided to do what they decided to do, and be able to articulate that.

There is a "why" behind every action, a purpose behind every decision. That is true, too, in God's decision to make you. When you ask God, "why me?" His response is never, "I dunno." He knows exactly why you were created. He knows his entire plan and purpose for why He decided the world needed you in it. He has a reason for every part of you, your personality, and the environment and interactions where He placed you. You were created specifically for such a time as this. While the world may try to throw a wrench in His plan for you, He turns everything that is thrown at you right around to keep furthering His purpose for you. Nothing is powerful enough to stop what God wants to do in your life and through your life, if you love him.

You are already called according to His purpose. His purpose is good because He is good. Jesus came to give you, yes you, an abundant life. You have a calling and purpose on your life, He will show you His power so that His name can be proclaimed. You are no accident. Love Him and allow Him to bring your purpose to fruition.

But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth” Exodus 9:16

Our purpose is to do what is right, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of others. 2 Corinthians 8:21

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” Romans 8:28

I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted” Job 42:2

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” Proverbs 19:21

All things are done according to God’s plan and decision; and God chose us to be his own people in union with Christ because of his own purpose, based on what he had decided from the very beginning. Ephesians 1:11

“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” Philippians 2:12-13

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" Jeremiah 29:11
